Windows Computer Recommendations |

Windows will eventually self-destruct unless you maintain it. Think of it like a European car that needs constant oil changes, tire inflation and rotations, cleaning etc. Here are some things you can do to delay the inevitable: 1. Use Firefox instead of Internet Exploder. It's free and tabbed browsing is cool. 2. Use an anti-virus program. I like GRISOFT's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. If you want to, you can upgrade to the pro edition and pay for it. 3. Get Microsoft's AntiSpyware program. It's free for now. 4. With XP, use the built-in firewall (it's in your Control Panel). You can check to see how well you are protected with the Shields UP!! site from GRC. 5. Use a hardware firewall like a Linksys BEFSR41 (wired) or WRT54Gx (wireless), especially if you have more than one computer that you want connected to your DSL/Cable line. 6. Use Microsoft Update. Yes, it's dumb that you have to keep your computer updated all the time but that's life. Even though once in a while the update is worse than the original problem, most of the time the update is better than the original problem so go with the numbers. Last updated: January 28, 2006 |
